Default Growling at boarding kennel

Hello, I own a boarding kennel and have protection dogs stay, so far I have had no issues but today I had one arrive that growled at me....

Background on dog-3 year old male, this dog is taken by the owner for private protection training, it is not a working dog, this is more like a hobby for her.
When she arrived with the dog I noticed it pulling her all over the place and not listening.

So she puts him in the kennel, later I take him a walk after making him sit first when he tried to bolt out the door, no problems.
Then I put a water dish in and when I'm doing this I am bending down, he comes over wagging his tail in a friendly manner and pushed his head into my hand, I scratched him under his chin after a second or two he deep growled me, I stood up and said no firmly and left his kennel.

I have fed and walked him since with no issues.

I did drop his owner an email, she said oh I thought he had bit you already!...kinda worrying, then said I must have bent over him which he dislikes, I did not do this, I was at face level with him when he growled, I did not look him in the eye either, I never do.
