Hi everyone. New owner with no experience with ppd.(If its what i have.) My family and i are recent victims of a crime which made us consider a dog for protection. We have owned dogs in the past but never really thought that our dogs would just run away. We now face a threat that is still here. Person who commited crime to us is going to be released anytime soon. Thats another story. Well we went out looking for a dog and talked to many trainers that all said we have the dog for you. My wife and i finally decided on a dog and the price of the was a factor. bought the dog from adlerhorst. Big name in providing dogs for police departments here in california.
Now the question.
I have had the dog now for 5 days. Great with the kids and family. He was a dual purpose dog that was returned from a police dept. that did not pass on some stuff. ?????. the dog bites the sleeve hard, obedience trained and was recommended to us because i have children. My reason for this dog was I reallly need a dog that runs hard at the gate, bark and bite if anyone tries to come in. I have 3 boys, and as a fireman i may be gone for days at a time.
Question is, the dog has not barked one time. My concern is not that the dog wont go after a guy if commanded but i just dont want to be surprised from the guy who attempted to kidnap my son. Do i need to still give the dog time to get used to us and the family or can i now start working and imprinting the dog to bark anyone who comes near my house and letting him have a bite for a reward. im on an acre and a half and completely fenced. In a cul de sac and little traffic come thru. I love that he does not bark at the dog next door, the rabbits and stuff thats not a threat. But i want him to bark hard at anyone that comes to my fence.
Very sorry for such a long post. Any advice and training hints would greatly be appreciated.
