Default How soon to start corrections?

Hi all,

We have had our male malinois for a couple of weeks now.He is about 10 weeks old.We are doing mostly food stuff right now just wanted to get your guys thoughts on this?

He is a handfull that is sure but the house training is going fairly well probably more our faults with doing the family thing and not staying on top of him real close but it is not that bad though.

Do you have any recomendations on some reading about training? We have watched some of the leerberg stuff but i havent got any experience with that type of training. But the food drive is definately there.

thanks for any help.

david

David,

What types of corrections are you referring to (what are you trying to correct?)? 10 weeks is still pretty young. I personally like staying away from food as a reward for two main reasons:

1. Your dog is more inclined to expect food when he does something right in the future.

2. Strengthening the food-drive in a dog. IMO, they are more likely to accept food from a stranger, which could result in them being steered away from protection so that they can receive food.

David, Just re-read your post and noticed you requested recommendations on reading. Sorry for missing that. I would recommend the Koehler method to guard dog training. It has a great section on obedience (although, I do not believe it goes into training at that young of an age).

What you wrote in your post has nothing to do with the thread title.

Best book is Koehler method of obedience training. It's also included in the Koehler method of guard dog training that George recommended. Training with food is just fun stuff you can do with the dog while he's too young to realize he's more interested in other things, then it becomes useless. The Leerburg obedience video is a waste of time.

Thanks Dan and George,

Sorry about the mix up in the posting and the title. I have downloaded the kohler method of guard dog training and have read it through once.I will be getting more into it as he gets older and such. I sure wish i could have gotten an older dog but oh well you only can do what you can do.

Thanks
David
