I live in an apt., very spacious. The lease says No APBTs,Rotts, Dobies,GSDs, or any aggressive breed under BSL (there is no BSL where I live, thank goodness).
I would like to train a dog in PP,or SCH...I have always wanted to,and now I have the time to pursue this. So, with these aforementioned breeds out of the running, what breeds would you suggest as suitable?I also have children, by the way...
........I am ready to put my years of reading about these things into action!
They may be a little too fast for me,from what I have read about them...Of course, I prefer the APBT...but that's out...*sigh*...What do you think of Bouviers, Dan?
I read Chimera Kennels website, and the philosophy stated within is what I would like for a family guard,temperament-wise.
By the way, I love this site, the communication is very open, and it is very informative.
Lee is certainly a man to talk to. I'm not sure about temperament consistency within bandog litters, otherwise I'm attracted to his athletic looking dogs.
I always wanted to work with a good bouvier. A giant schnauzer is another choice if you like the hairy black dogs. To me breed is a very vague selection criteria if good dogs are not being produced consistently. Then you're getting into selecting lines and more importantly individuals. It's hard enough even without your apartment building limitations. I wonder how your neighbors would feel about a big slobbery Neo.
LOL...I would have a problem with a slobbery Neo.....I like them when they belong to someone else. :o)
I do like the Giant Schnauzer, too. I was looking into Boxers as well, but I'm really not a fan of how short their noses are,and the lack of good ones. The show line dogs I see are not my speed.
I am thinking that , between a Bouv and a Giant Schnauzer, The Bouv is more laid back,The Giant more firey. The Bouv is not a barker, but the Giants can be vocal. But I think that a Giant has more "snap and spark" than the laid back Bouv. The bouv looks a tad lazy, where the G.S. is ready to go....so far, how correct are my comparisons?
And how would you compare a Mal to these two?
I'm not an expert with any of those breeds. Out of the three I'd prefer a good Bouv. I'd keep him shaved always. But I wouldn't know where to start looking for a protective one.
I guess an American bulldog won't work for your situation because it looks like a pit bull.
Yeah,you are right.
The Black Russian Terrier is another that catches my interest, haven't met one in person, though.
Doesn't the Mal have a bit too much Go for a family with children?
Well,I guess if I am worried about it,I shouldn't own one......
A friend of mine in Canada is selling a trained young mal for a low price. I was at his house last year and was surprised at how mellow this dog is throughout the day. Not any different than a GSD.
