When I got my Malinois I rented a bedroom in a house, so really not any different than an apartment. No fenced yard, and very limited space for the dog inside. It is not something I would do again with this breed. So I don't recommend you go that route unless you really have the time and energy to devote to the dog and the dog alone. Be prepared to make sacrifices if you choose to go with one of these dogs.
Check out some Bouviers. The potential for this breed is there, you just have to find it.
Alison...that is what I was thinking...thanks for sharing your experience with me.:o)
I like the Bouv...Neighbors had one when I was young.great calm dog. I think someone on this forum has some working bouviers, but they are left natural and I would prefer mine docked and cropped. There is also a show breeder in my area but the price is a bit too steep ( well, thats what the hubby says ;o) )
I will be checking with the rental office to see if the Bouv is okay to have here.Their breed restriction recent amendment says "No dogs of any of the aggressive breeds" which is vague and left open to "their" interpretation of which breeds are"aggressive".
There is also a breeder( well known) rehoming some retired champion Standard and Giant Schnauzers....I will be calling for info today, but with a baby, I think a pup would be better for my peace of mind.A grown dog has its benefits as well, though.
I grew up with a bouvier and he was quite protective and very alert
once we were gone for the weekend and my neighbor who the dog had know since we got him was letting him out and feeding him, well her boyfriend who the dog had also known for 2-3 years went to let him out and he said all he saw was a giant black ball of teeth lunging at the door. apparently he didn't know him long enough.
he was amazingly friendly to everyone when out for a walk, but he was very serious when strangers came around his house.
I am seriously considering a Bouv.I won't have one for about a year, though...have to save up for one.I wanted one a bit sooner,but...oh well.Good things come to those who wait, I suppose.I like what you are saying about them, Bobby.Sounds like what I am looking for in a dog.******
