without them getting offended or mad? SpeciaLLY A new dog that you may not know well yourself and some person comes up to u wanting to pet it what is the best way to handle the situation without them getting mad at you? Wow in my life ih ave never tried to pet a strangers dog as an adult its just not something i dI. I will look and maybe ask a question if i am curious but i wont go up to the dog and touch it ever. It is not my dog the dog does not know me common sense tells me to give something that doesnt know u some space. I dont get why so many people out there have to be so pushy pushing themselves on your own pets. It is like some of the people are trying to proove something to themselves by petting someone elses dog.
A big issue is i dont trust the person like they might do something stupid like grab the dog in a rough way stare it in the eyes something that might piss a dog off. Most people dont know how to act around a sharp dog.
yeah but u are a cop if i say i have a protection dog then they will be like wtf and accuse me of having a dangerous animal that is going to kill someone u know how people are
"Please don't touch the dog." if there's time.
"DON'T touch the dog!!" if they're coming in fast.
One time I hit a guy's hand as he was reaching down to touch my pup, he came in too fast for me to speak. This was after I moved off the sidewalk in advance of him passing by just so there would be no interaction. The guy turned out to be mentally disturbed and it almost ended up in a fight.
The way I see it is if it's an adult and doesn't have the sense to ask then they deserve no courtesy.
With people that ask it's a different story. I say "Thanks for asking. I don't let strangers touch my dog." Some people understand, others take it personally. I don't have enough time in the day to care. Sometimes I make an exception with good looking girls and say sure you can pet my dog
All that is in cases where I really don't want the dog touched. With my rottweiler if I have time I don't care if people pet him.
BTW if your dog wears a muzzle no one will want to pet it. Another alternative is a working dog vest/harness, most people respect it and don't make overtures at the dog.
Question to the PSD handlers; if your dog is in the vehicle and someone comes close to the vehicle trying to look inside and see the dog, how far do you let that go before you say something?
on the cop cars in california written in black all over the car it is STEP BACK WARNING STEP BACK FROM THE CAR or someting like that if it is a cop car that has a k9 in it
i was thinking so people dont get all anal on me maybe saying sorry my dog isnt really use to getting pet by strangers or my dog is a bit shy of people that way they wont have their egos bruised lol
i kinda like the vest idea also
there need to be a universal dog color or something a dog wears that is a sign the dog should not be pet like for horses a horse where iam from that wears a red ribbon on its tail is a horse you should never walk behind or walk to close to because it is known to kick people either red ribbon or black i forgot
also dan what are ur reasons for not wanting a dog pet usually? like the puppy for instance where u hit the guys hand away?
for me it is just because sometimes a dog can be harp or get pissed at the way a stranger will pet it or stare into his or her eyes and may upset my dog and cause a scene something i do not want to deal with
Frankly I go by how I feel about the person. If they look like someone I don't want touching my dog then that's how I feel end of story, it's my dog. With a pup I want to see first that the pup wants to go and check out the people not the other way around, I don't want the pup to feel intimidated. When I first take a pup to strange places around strange people I let it watch from a distance and observe its reactions.
I played with the idea to see what kind of attitude the dog develops when people never touch it. I concluded that it makes no difference. If the dog is predisposed to like people, you can keep him away until he's a year old, then after the first time he has contact he will be just like any dog that likes to meet people.
A sharp dog that likes to nail people is of course another story. I'd put a muzzle on such a dog in public places. When I look back at the things I did when I was younger it's amazing the chances I took, never putting a muzzle even on aggressive dogs. But I was very focused on the dogs and was always there to control them. Still those were probably mistakes.. Nowadays I just want to relax and make it so there's almost no chance of an accidental bite. I don't want a child to be bit, I don't want to lose my dog. I do enjoy seeing that reporter get bit though, as I would with other fools. I must admit though that the first time I came in contact with security dog I did something similar, and the dog hit me in the face with his teeth. I don't know if I wasn't bit because I moved away fast enough, the handler pulled the dog back, or the dog didn't really want to bite me hard, maybe a combination of all three.
