Default Possible to find a good working GSD?

I currently own a Belgian Mal, but my favorite breed is the German Shepherd Dog, but the last few years I haven't seen any good ones at least for protection. Do you guys think they still have the true GSD in Germany or even the Netherlands but won't sell them here because the fear of there bloodines being ruined?

I just like to see the GSD back to there original physique and temperment. I think I know of one place that breed decent GSD but I would say they are top ones. Just wondering.

I'm not familar with your local breeders or whether GSDs in your area are primarily bred for working capibilties, show, or as family pets. Its my understanding good majority of GSD owners don't exploit their dog's working capibilities and simply have them as a pet or a deterent. They may backyard breed their dog to another without consideration of bloodlines to make a quick buck. Those pups in my local area rarely sell for more than $300 - $400. I found my dog after researching the breed, breeders, and forums like this one to give me a good idea as to what I was to look for during selection.

I don't think Germany, Netherlands, etc. are hoarding good dogs. It's just difficult for the common man here in North America to establish a relationship with foreign breeders and get their hands on one of their dogs. Besides, the shipping cost + the price of the dog is not usually cost effective to the average person. That's why we have to look to GSD breeders who have established those relationships, exercise due diligence with regards to lineage, and take great care in perserving the breeds original purpose.

I'm not aware of any working GSD shortage.

Thanks Doug. I know in Germany would never sell us there best stock but than again I would also. But it seems there are so few good working GSD's around. these breed used to be legendary as a working dog. It seems nobody follows Von Stefianitz rules anymore. I know I mispelled his name but you guys know whom I'm talking about.

Getting working GSDs is not that hard. I worked some very good dogs when in the US in 2009 and there are still dogs in Europe, Australia etc. I actually like a lot of the stock from Denmark etc at the moment. What "type" of dog do you like so I can point you in the right direction?

If you like a dog the type in my avatar then that can be more difficult but if you like a more solid Mal type that is a fair bit easier.

How would you describe the type of the dog in your avatar Mick? Are you referring to just the color? What is a more solid mal type? If you could post a pic..

What I am talking about regards my avatar is the size and mass of the dog. That dog as photographed here is 48kgs (aprox 100lbs) and he has a massive head, is very broad through chest etc. He is also very strong and heavy in rear.

More solid Mal type would be a dog more like this.

This is an image of Kenzo vom Nordenstamm who is one of my favourite dogs in the world right now. He is smaller than a lot of the dogs of type I like but he himself and what he is producing in working ability means that I will forgive such things. He would be a lot smaller than the type you see in my avatar but Max was a rare dog in this day and age, and Kenzos working ability is without question.

Maybe this dog shows the Mal type a little more.

Max has the coloring and mass of a rott, and is in the right hands that could have purposefully made him so

The mass on that dog is incredible! I'd hate to be on the receiving end if that dog was after me.
